During our amazing stay at Shangri-La hotel in Dubai, we were able to try one of its signature restaurants – the Shang Palace. It’s the restaurant we’ve been eyeing for quite some time now because of its famous yum cha and Beijing duck. The Shang Palace which you can find in other branches in the world serves up a delightful taste of traditional Cantonese cuisine. We’re so glad to finally try it last weekend and experience what other people are raving about.

Location

If you’re coming by train station you have to stop at financial metro station via red line. The hotel is conveniently located a few steps from here and the restaurant is situated at the first floor. Valet parking is available for free to those who are dining in the restaurant. Make sure to have a reservation online or by phone before visiting as last weekend it was full of hungry diners!

Ambiance

Looking at the whole setup, you can clearly tell it’s inspired by Far Eastern décor with great emphasis on red color, some accents of gold along with dim lighting. The simple yet elegant ambiance of Shang Palace creates a soothing feeling which was a feature of any Chinese dining. It was a perfect setting for our romantic date night. But it’s also a great place for those who are coming with friends or families as there were enough tables designed for bigger groups. Large tables come with a “lazy susan” a rotating tray which is commonly found in authentic Chinese restaurants.

Food and Menu

Before we begin our gastronomic adventure, we were handed a cold towel which was a lovely gesture. While we were ready to try the renowned dishes, we can’t help but also try the other selection as the menu was really extensive. Apart from the main Cantonese dishes, they also have provincial delicacies and other traditional cuisines. Whether you like steaming bowls of seafood broth or live seafood, noodles or heavy rice, beef and lamb, tender chicken deep-fried to an array of vegetable selections down to sinful or healthy desserts – they have it covered at Shang Palace.

Starting off with the soup, we ordered the Shanghainese wonton soup with minced chicken (AED 48). It was so comforting and a warm pleasure to start the culinary journey at Shang.

Next was the appetiser, we opted for the famous dish that trip advisor reviewers are raving about – the crispy prawns with mango-mayonnaise sauce (AED 68).  Without exaggeration but only a pure honest review, it was the best prawn toast we’ve ever encountered!

Halfway of the meal, a classic set of 8 different types of dumplings with 3 kinds of sauce was served. Every time a dish was served, they gladly explain the dish or suggest which one is the best sauce for the specific dumpling. The textures of the buns and coverings are just the right side of sticky. It was filling and extremely satisfying that I almost felt full.

Then a sizzling bowl of braised rice with assorted seafood in supreme broth (AED 65) presented to our table. With its generous portion, the husband had a slight food coma after :p I can’t blame him though as it was cooked to perfection making the flavors rich and intense.

The signature dish and my favorite was the Beijing duck where we ordered a half set (AED 238). The crispy duck skin served with pancakes, cucumber, leeks and hoisin sauce. It may be looking expensive but it’s all worth it, we assure you.

The journey ended with the dessert where deconstructed tonka bean crème brulee, mango and caramel (AED 55) offer a deliciously fresh sweet note to cap off the meal.

Staff and Service

While everything looks elegant at the restaurant we didn’t feel it was as formal as the hospitality and passion of each staff here were kind and just amazing. The efficient service and beautiful presentation of the food from their world class Chinese Chefs all adds up to the authenticity of Shang Palace. From the lovely manager, Alex, Lina, the Chef and the rest of the team did a great job in making every guest feel so welcome. In a timely manner, they visit each table to ask how the food was or if guest need anything else. They are prompt in clearing tables, changing plates and serving the dishes in a proper timing. Thanks to the wonderful team of Shang Palace 🙂

Overall Experience

From the lovely ambiance to the food which were astonishingly good and perfectly presented, the professional yet warm staff – our dining experience at the restaurant was one of a kind. The high quality of the dishes made the meal even more remarkable. Shang Palace turned our stay at Shangri-La Dubai into a more unforgettable one.
