Buon appetito! The Italian phrase that my husband used to say before a meal. Whatever our food is, “Chicken Adobo” or tuyo (dried fish in the Philippines) he will still say it. So imagine his happiness when we dine in a real Italian restaurant, Rosso – Amwaj Rotana’s one out of five signature restaurant. A plus factor when I told him that it’s also a bar. Talk about Italian wines. Our amazing dining experience happened during our 2 night staycation at the hotel.
Since the glorious cooler months in Dubai started, we chose to dine in al fresco. It’s more beautiful in the afternoon as it’s facing the Jumeirah beach. We arrived past 7 and surprised to see that the place is already bustling – a substantial crowd of expats and locals patronizing the establishment. Reservation is highly recommended. With sophisticated interior of bold red and black colors, dim lighting, round shelves behind the bar, I must say it’s a sleek Italian spot. The atmosphere is alive, cheery and chill complete with active music playing on the background. It’s also worth to mention that there are warm heaters outside as my husband felt cold when he wears a thin shirt.
Italian dishes are hard to pronounce. Good thing, our server was a Filipino and ordering from their extensive offering became easy. The menu consist of traditional Italian first course or starters, prime cold cuts, fresh salads, hearty soups, rice dish or Risottos and pasta dishes. While for the main course, dishes with meat, chicken or seafood are available. There are options for side dishes, of course pizzas and Italian desserts with Dubai touch. A wide range of beverages including signature juices, wines, liquors and more spirits are listed in a separate menu.
After minutes of discussion of which to order, we decided not to ask for pizza as this is heavy for our tummy and we want to try the dishes that people raving about.
While waiting for our order, a complimentary basket of bread was served. In no time, our first traditional Italian course arrived – the Frittura Di Calamari E Gamberi Con Verdurine bet you can read it fast 🙂 To make it simple, our first dish includes fried calamari, prawns and vegetable Julienne served with tartar sauce. We love how crispy it is and matching with the sauce, you have that perfect kick-starter there! 🙂
Together, the spicy salami came along. It is seasoned with paprika, chilli pepper and crushed fennel seeds. If you wonder how I remember all these, please don’t, i took a photo of what we ordered so I can share it to you guys! 🙂 This was my choice as I love spicy food but not too spicy ok. We were informed how Rosso uses traditional methods in curing meat. No wonder why the prime cuts was tasty!
Next order came in quick, the Zuppa Di Pesce……. (it’s a long name guys!) Just ask for the seafood soup! 🙂 My husband savoured most of it. I cannot blame him though as the soup was awesomely delicious.
Then another favorite of mine came next, the Riso Acquerello Al Funghi E Tartufo Nero (A) (V). From their menu, if you find (A) it means that it contain alcohol and (V) if vegetarian, how smart! This Risotto (Italian rice dish) has mushrooms, black truffle and parmesan cheese. We learned that Riso Acquerello is one of Italy’s finest rice grains. I like that it wasn’t too creamy.
The Chef’s star pasta dish came together with the Risotto, it’s called Agnolotti Con Gamberi, Asparagi E Mascarpone. This innovative dish has prawns, asparagus, mascarpone cheese and wine. Our first time to see round pastas arrange in flower form. We love the plating of all the dishes presented to us. This truly a star meal, evenly cooked and does not feel overly heavy! And guys if you are a health conscious, Rosso can prepare your dish with gluten free and whole wheat pasta, just ask.
We skipped the main course with meat or chicken as we planned to have it in our next gastronomic adventure at JB’s. So the husband ordered another Chef’s Star dish – Salmone Organico. It’s an organic salmon fillet served with capers, olives, pine seeds and anchovies. As usual, whenever we have salmon, my husband tends to forget that he has a wife to share with! Complemented with mashed potatoes, he totally doesn’t care about me! haha 🙂
Our meal was accompanied by an Antares wine. It is suggested by our kind server George when we stared like 15 minutes in the beverages list. He said that it was one of their top selling wines from Chile. When you’re in doubt like us, don’t hesitate to ask the well-informed waiting staff, they will be more than happy to recommend from their selection of prestigious champagnes and over 300 Italian labels. Along with this, we also have their signature Rotana Palm and a glass of Virgin Mojito. The husband who was a fan of sweet drinks ordered for another glass!
As we almost forgot to save room for desserts, good we got to chat with Ms. Dewi the assistant restaurant manager of Rosso that she offered us to try their Tiramisu – an Italian classic dessert with mascarpone cream and espresso-soaked lady finger biscuits. And we can’t be more than thankful to her! It was heavenly delicious! A perfect way to cap off our Italian culinary adventure at Rosso 🙂
The Staff & Service
From the moment we arrived, Ann gladly assisted us to our table. George, the staff assigned to our table was very dedicated as he promptly clears our plates, refill water glasses and coming over in a timely manner to check if everything was fine. 🙂 The service was remarkably prompt. And I would like to give a shout out to Dewi who is now we considered our friend, yes guys! We make friends in every restaurant we visit 🙂 She was friendly and professional at the same time. This lady is so adorable! Apart from having a full stomach because of the good Italian food, we adored the great service of the restaurant staff. Thanks guys! We’ll surely come back.
After a great dining experience we had here, I will never look the same with Italian restaurants here in Dubai. I can extremely say that we truly have a scrumptious authentic Italian culinary adventure. Not only because of its delicious food but with Rosso’s beautiful setting, lively atmosphere and of course, the warm and helpful staff certainly made this restaurant & bar deserving of every award they presently have.
